BALER: Activities to do in Baler aside from Surfing
Baler is the birth place of Manuel Quezon, the first president of the Philippines. It is not just a surfing spot or some destination; this place has rich history and cultural value.
Commute - since we are travelling night time we booked a Joy Bus going there. This option is more faster and comfortable. The seats are like lazy boy inclusive of blanket and snacks. Book here. Going back to Manila we rode the Genesis bus regular aircon. Just ride a motorcycle from Sabang and they will take you to the bus station.
Private vehicle - it's easy just use Google maps then search for the address of your hotel
Group Tour - do a search on Facebook and you will find many group tours that offer Baler package, this typically already include van, accommodation and tours for a cheap price.
Where to stay?
We stayed at Rushies Point, their rooms are nice and clean and very affordable. We also arrived early and we were allowed to check-in early. Rushie's brother also drove us to all our tour destinations. They also have a bar that has a band playing so no need to walk away from the hotel unless of course you would like to explore the other restaurants and bars along the coastline of Sabang.
Activities
Since we arrived early, after breakfast we immediately started the tour and the following were the places we've been to:- Trekking to Mother Falls - It was a 30-minute trek to get to the falls, you will pass by a stream and small falls before getting to the big falls. The water is clean but it's so cold so better wear a rash guard.
Mother Falls |
- Balete Tree - Asia's biggest and oldest balete tree. This tree is so huge you could literally get inside it, it sounds and looks creepy yet amazing.
Inside the Tree |
- Dona Aurora's House - Aurora Aragon is the wife of Manuel L Quezon, the first one to be recognized as the first lady of the country.
- Baler Cathedral - where the historical Siege of Baler event took place
- Ermita Hill - found along the highway is a historical figure called Tromba Marina which depicts how the residents of Baler survived a Tsunami way back 1735. They took refuge by climbing the mountains in order to save themselves. In Ermita Hill you will also find an overlooking view of the sea and the majestic waves.
Tromba Marina |
- Museo de Baler - at the center of the museum is President Manuel L Quezon's monument . Inside you will find interesting historical artifacts and paintings that will tell visitors what Baler's history is all about.
- Diguisit Beach - this place showcases the stunning rock formations created by years of pounding of waves. The place is great for sunrise or sunset photo shoots. You can also walk along the shore and have your feel of the rocks and corals.
- Swimming and Surfing - aside from the beach we also looked for a resort with pool so that the kids could also experience swimming without the waves
- Food Trips - we went to the market to buy fish and seafood for dinner, we also went to town for very cheap breakfast and lunch at karinderyas. We also tried their fanct and not so fancy buffets.
Some Tips
- Group tours are best to avail if you are on a very tight budget
- If you are going to do a DIY try to book your tour at the hotel you are staying as they offer cheaper rates
- You can go to the market, buy and cook your own food or go to karinderya's at town proper
